The price is $399. The ownership cost is more complicated.
MicroDuck has one unusually attractive number attached to it:
$399.
That is the introductory preorder price Pollen Robotics currently lists, before taxes and shipping. The robot also comes with a gamepad and built-in behaviors, so this is not a developer kit where you immediately need to buy half a table of accessories just to make it move.
That makes the price easy to compare.
But I don't think $399 is the right number to use when deciding whether MicroDuck makes sense for you.
The real question is:
How much will MicroDuck actually cost me to own and enjoy?
For some people, the answer is close to $399.
For others, the total cost is much higher.
And some of the most important costs have nothing to do with money.
Start with the obvious part: the hardware
The base MicroDuck is currently listed at $399 before taxes and shipping. Pollen's store also lists the optional Charger Pack at $39 and the Dev Pack at $119.
You do not automatically need either accessory.
That distinction matters.
The standard product already includes a gamepad and is designed to be playable out of the box. Pollen describes the robot as ready to play immediately, while developers can use the software stack to go deeper later.
So I would not treat:
$399 robot + $39 charger + $119 dev pack
as the “real MicroDuck price.”
That would be misleading.
Instead, think in terms of different ownership paths.
The casual owner
You buy the robot.
You use the included controller.
You explore its built-in behaviors.
Your cost is relatively close to the base price, plus taxes and shipping.
The experimenter
You want to experiment more seriously.
You may end up buying additional hardware or spending money on equipment around it.
The developer
You care less about the accessory bill and more about what the ecosystem allows you to build.
Your real investment may be your time, compute, and development effort.
Those are three very different purchases hiding behind the same $399 headline.
The first hidden cost is shipping and taxes
The $399 price is not the checkout total.
Pollen explicitly states that the preorder price is before taxes and shipping. Its shipping policy says MicroDuck ships from warehouses in France for European orders and the United States for North American orders, while applicable taxes and shipping costs are calculated at checkout. The company also notes that the merchandise originates from China and that some duties may apply depending on the rate at purchase.
So the first mistake would be to think:
“I need exactly $399.”
You don't.
You need to think:
$399 + whatever checkout adds in my country.
That is mundane, but it is part of the actual purchase decision.
And because MicroDuck is currently a preorder, I would rather calculate the real checkout cost than anchor myself to the headline number.
The second hidden cost is time
This is the one I think people underestimate.
MicroDuck is designed to be playable out of the box, but the product is also explicitly built around experimentation, software development, simulation and reinforcement learning.
That means MicroDuck can consume your time in two very different ways.
You can simply use it.
Or you can start wondering:
Can I make it do this?
And that question can become expensive.
Not in dollars.
In evenings.
One small experiment becomes another.
You install something.
You test something.
You discover something interesting.
You find a GitHub project.
You try another behavior.
You spend an hour debugging something you originally expected to take ten minutes.
If you are a developer, this may be exactly why you bought it.
If you are not, it can turn a supposedly simple gadget into a surprisingly demanding hobby.
That isn't necessarily bad.
It just needs to be counted as part of ownership.
This is why the Dev Pack is not really the important question
The obvious question is:
“Do I need the $119 Dev Pack?”
The more useful question is:
“Do I want MicroDuck to be a product I use, or a platform I build on?”
If you only want to interact with the robot, you may not need to spend much beyond the base purchase.
If you want to develop new behaviors, train policies or experiment with the underlying software, your requirements become very different.
Pollen provides simulation and an open software stack specifically for that kind of development.
That is also why I would not tell everyone to buy every optional accessory on day one.
Buy for the way you actually intend to use the robot.
Don't buy the developer experience because the product page makes it look exciting.
The third hidden cost is expectation
This might be the most important one.
When you spend $399 on a robot, you don't just buy hardware.
You buy a mental picture of what the product is going to become.
That is dangerous.
Because MicroDuck is unusually good at inviting imagination.
Pollen talks about teaching new behaviors, simulation, reinforcement learning and sharing physical behaviors.
A buyer can easily translate that into:
“This thing is going to keep getting smarter.”
But that is not a guaranteed product feature.
It is a possibility.
The difference matters.
The ecosystem may become fantastic.
It may grow slowly.
Certain capabilities may prove harder than expected.
Some community projects may remain experiments rather than polished consumer features.
Some ideas may never arrive.
So I think one of the biggest hidden costs is paying $399 for the future you imagine rather than the product you actually receive.
That is a much more dangerous mistake than paying a few extra dollars for shipping.
The fourth cost is what happens when the novelty fades
A robot has a special problem that a lot of software products don't.
The first interaction is often the most exciting.
You don't need to explain why.
You see a small physical machine move around your desk.
It looks alive.
It falls.
It gets back up.
It does something unexpected.
You show someone.
The experience is immediate.
But the novelty curve eventually catches up.
And when it does, you are left with the actual product.
This is why I think the software ecosystem matters so much.
If the robot's possibilities stay fixed, the number of reasons to interact with it eventually becomes limited.
If the ecosystem keeps producing new behaviors, integrations and experiments, the experience can keep changing.
There are already early signs of this kind of behavior in the community. One MicroDuck owner who had not yet received their robot was already developing a Home Assistant voice-satellite project using real LLM services and MCP integration, essentially treating the robot as a platform rather than just a standalone gadget.
That is the kind of development I would pay attention to.
Not because every owner will want the same setup.
But because it shows the direction in which the ownership value could expand.
The fifth cost is waiting
This sounds strange, but it belongs in the calculation.
Pollen's official shipping policy currently targets first deliveries before Christmas 2026, while recent reporting says new orders are facing roughly four-to-six-month waits.
A long preorder can create a psychological problem.
You pay today.
You receive later.
Your expectations have months to grow.
You see other people building things.
You watch videos.
You read discussions.
You imagine what yours will do.
By the time it arrives, the product may be completely different in your head from the product that arrives at your door.
That is another form of ownership cost:
expectation inflation.
The longer the wait, the more important it becomes to judge the product based on what exists rather than what you hope will exist.
But there is one way the wait can reduce your cost
This is the interesting part.
Waiting also allows other people to spend time answering questions for you.
You can observe:
- actual user feedback;
- software projects;
- common problems;
- battery experience;
- useful integrations;
- community activity;
- whether people continue using the robot;
- whether the ecosystem grows.
That can reduce the risk of buying the wrong product.
For an ordinary buyer, information is valuable.
Sometimes the cheapest way to buy a product is simply to wait until you know what you are buying.
So what should a normal buyer actually budget?
I would think about MicroDuck in four layers.
Layer 1 — Purchase cost
The $399 introductory preorder price, plus taxes and shipping.
Layer 2 — Optional hardware
Only buy accessories that solve a problem you actually have.
The store currently lists a $39 Charger Pack and a $119 Dev Pack, but neither should automatically be treated as mandatory.
Layer 3 — Time
How much of your free time are you willing to put into the robot?
For some owners, almost none.
For developers, potentially a lot.
Layer 4 — Attention
This one is harder to measure.
Will you still care about MicroDuck after the first week?
After the first month?
After six months?
That is where the ecosystem matters most.
My take
I would not reject MicroDuck because the real cost is higher than $399.
That's true of almost every interesting hobby product.
What matters is what you are paying for.
If you want a small robot that is fun to interact with, $399 may be a reasonable entry point.
If you want a development platform, $399 can be even more interesting because the software ecosystem adds potential value beyond the hardware itself.
But if you are buying it because you imagine that, six months from now, it will automatically behave like a fully capable personal AI assistant, I would be much more cautious.
The future is the exciting part of MicroDuck.
It is also the part you should be careful not to pay for twice.
The $399 robot is real.
The ecosystem is promising.
The long-term experience is still being written.
And that is why I would look at the total cost not simply as money, but as:
money + time + expectations + attention.
For a developer, that combination may be exactly what makes MicroDuck worth buying early.
For everyone else, it is a good reason to understand the ecosystem before deciding.
