The first thing I noticed about MicroDuck wasn't the 15 motors.

It was the price.

$399.

That is low enough to make a small consumer robot feel surprisingly accessible, but high enough that I wouldn't buy one without thinking about it.

And I think that's where MicroDuck gets interesting.

Because when you see it moving around, it is very easy to think:

"That's adorable. I want one."

Then your brain catches up:

"Wait. Am I really spending $399 on this?"

So I tried to look at the purchase from the other side.

Not:

Is MicroDuck impressive?

But:

What am I actually getting for my $399?

First, you're getting a real little robot

MicroDuck is not just an animated character with a screen.

The robot is about 25 cm tall and weighs around 800 g. It has 15 motors, a camera, LiDAR, two IMUs, microphones, a speaker, and an articulated beak that can grasp objects. (Pollen Robotics)

That is a lot of hardware for something small enough to sit beside your monitor.

And the robot actually uses it.

It can walk.

It can crouch.

It can sit.

It can grasp.

It can kick a ball.

It can roll with its roller setup.

It can recover after falling.

Those aren't hypothetical features buried in a roadmap. They are part of the behavior set Pollen currently publishes for the robot. (Pollen Robotics)

That matters to me more than a long specification sheet.

I would much rather have five things the robot can actually do than fifty features that sound good on a product page.

The hardware is probably the easiest part to justify

If I'm looking purely at the physical machine, $399 doesn't strike me as outrageous.

You're getting a compact robot with a fairly complicated body, multiple motors, sensors, onboard computing, a battery, and a controller.

There are also optional packs for charging, spare parts, and play accessories.

So if you're the kind of person who sees a moving little robot and thinks:

"I actually want to own one."

I can understand the price.

The more difficult question is what happens after the first few days.

Because I don't think you're really buying hardware

You're buying an experience.

And that experience is going to depend heavily on what you expect.

If you expect:

"A tiny AI assistant that can manage my life."

I'd hesitate.

If you expect:

"A cute robot that can move around, interact with things, and give me something fun to play with."

That makes much more sense.

And if you're thinking:

"I want a physical robot that I can keep exploring over time."

Then MicroDuck becomes more interesting again.

That doesn't mean every buyer is going to train a new walking policy.

It means the product isn't limited to one completely fixed experience.

The part I'd pay attention to most

Honestly, it isn't the number of sensors.

It's the gap between:

what MicroDuck can do

and

what you want it to do.

If those two things are already close, you're probably going to be happy.

If you are buying it because you're imagining an entirely different robot—one that talks naturally, remembers everything, handles tasks for you, and acts like a full personal assistant—then you're buying based on imagination rather than the product in front of you.

That's where I'd be careful.

I also wouldn't confuse "open source" with "everything is open"

Pollen is open about the software stack, simulation, and reinforcement-learning training tools.

That doesn't make the product bad.

It just means the word "open source" means something specific here.

And I think buyers should know that before they spend the money.

So would I spend $399?

I'd separate the answer into two parts.

For the hardware:

I think the price is compelling.

For the experience:

I'm more cautious.

A robot can have excellent hardware and still become boring.

It can also have a relatively simple set of behaviors and still become something you genuinely enjoy having around.

The difference is you.

What do you want from it?

If you want a little machine that is cute, physical, playful, and interesting enough to explore, $399 makes sense to me.

If you need it to justify itself through productivity, I'd probably spend the money elsewhere.

My biggest question isn't "Is it worth $399?"

It's:

"Would I still want this robot if I knew exactly what it could do on day one?"

That's the question I'd answer before buying.

Because $399 is buying today's MicroDuck.

The possibilities are interesting.

But possibilities shouldn't be confused with things you already own.
